12 Pakistani Army Soldiers Killed in Taliban-linked Suicide Bomber Storm in Bannu
In a tragic and brazen attack, the Bannu military cantonment in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, located over 330 kilometers east of Islamabad, fell under heavy assault early on Monday.
Reports indicate that the attack was orchestrated by multiple suicide bombers affiliated with Jaish Fursan-e-Muhammad, a faction of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur.
The incident began when the assailants attempted to breach the security perimeter of the cantonment using an explosive-laden vehicle.
They successfully detonated the vehicle at a checkpoint, triggering a massive explosion that allowed them to advance further into the area.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple loud blasts followed by intense gunfire as the attackers engaged in a fierce battle with security forces stationed at the cantonment.
Initial casualty reports are grim, with at least 12 Pakistani soldiers confirmed dead and several others injured.
Government hospitals in Bannu have reported treating eight wounded individuals, indicating the severity of the attack.
Tragically, the violence also claimed the lives of approximately eight civilians in the vicinity, although exact numbers remain unconfirmed at this time.
In response to the attack, the Pakistani military swiftly mobilized, deploying gunship aircraft to provide aerial support and engage the attackers.
Additionally, a regional lockdown was imposed, which included restrictions on internet and phone services to prevent further coordination by the assailants.
Jaish Fursan-e-Muhammad, known for its militant activities in the region, has targeted security forces and government installations in the past.
The group's affiliation with the TTP's Hafiz Gul Bahadur underscores ongoing security challenges faced by Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.
The attack marks a significant escalation in violence following the TTP's cessation of a ceasefire with the Pakistani government in November 2022. Islamabad has categorically ruled out negotiations with the TTP, reflecting the government's stance amid escalating militant activities.
The ongoing operation aims to secure the area and restore safety for both military personnel and civilians affected by this senseless act of violence.
