Video Shows 100 Feet Wide Sinkhole Swallowing Soccer Field in US

In a shocking event caught on surveillance camera, a massive sinkhole stretching 100 feet wide opened up in an Illinois park, swallowing a light pole and leaving a gaping, deep hole.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at Gordon Moore Park in the city of Alton, about 18 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.

The surveillance footage captures the terrifying moment as an area between two soccer and football fields collapses around a light pole, sending it tumbling into the sinkhole and releasing plumes of smoke.

Alton Parks and Recreation Director Michael Haynes described the scene to NBC affiliate KSDK of St. Louis, saying, “It looks like something out of a movie, right? It looks like a bomb went off.”

Fortunately, no one was on the field at the time, and there were no injuries reported.

The sinkhole, approximately 100 feet wide and 30 feet deep, is believed to be the result of an underground mine collapse.

A spokesperson for New Frontier Materials, the company that owns the mine, stated that the affected area has been secured and will remain off-limits while inspectors and experts examine the mine and conduct repairs.

The spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating, “No one was injured in the incident, which has been reported to officials at the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) in accordance with applicable regulations.

Safety is our top priority. We will work with the city to remediate this issue as quickly and safely as possible to ensure minimal impact on the community.”

The city of Alton and New Frontier Materials are coordinating to address the situation. Gordon Moore Park has been temporarily closed while the sinkhole investigation is ongoing.

Alton Parks and Recreation shared on social media that the park will remain closed until the investigation and necessary repairs are completed.

This dramatic incident highlights the potential dangers of underground mines and the importance of safety measures to prevent such occurrences.

The community remains vigilant as experts work to secure the area and ensure that Gordon Moore Park can safely reopen to the public.
