In a significant escalation of violence, an Israeli airstrike in the West Bank city of Jenin has resulted in the deaths of seven Palestinians.  The Israeli military described the operation as a "counterterrorism activity" targeting militants in the area.  The clashes, which involved both ground troops and airstrikes, underscore the continuing volatility and tension in the region. According to the Israeli military, soldiers had surrounded a building in Jenin where they believed terrorists had barricaded themselves.  An exchange of fire ensued, culminating in an airstrike that the military claims struck several armed militants.  The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that seven people were killed, but did not specify whether they died from the airstrike or the ensuing gunfire.  The Islamic Jihad militant group later identified four of the deceased as its members.
