7 Palestinians Killed in Jenin by an Israeli Military Operation in West Bank: Watch
In a significant escalation of violence, an Israeli airstrike in the West Bank city of Jenin has resulted in the deaths of seven Palestinians.
The Israeli military described the operation as a "counterterrorism activity" targeting militants in the area.
The clashes, which involved both ground troops and airstrikes, underscore the continuing volatility and tension in the region.
According to the Israeli military, soldiers had surrounded a building in Jenin where they believed terrorists had barricaded themselves.
An exchange of fire ensued, culminating in an airstrike that the military claims struck several armed militants.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that seven people were killed, but did not specify whether they died from the airstrike or the ensuing gunfire.
The Islamic Jihad militant group later identified four of the deceased as its members.
Jenin, a known stronghold for militants, frequently sees military operations by Israeli forces.
The latest clashes come on the heels of an announcement by the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now, which revealed plans by the Israeli government to construct nearly 5,300 new homes in settlements within the West Bank.
These construction plans are seen as part of a broader strategy by the current hard-line government to solidify Israeli control over the West Bank, thereby complicating the prospects for a future Palestinian state.
The recent violence in Jenin is part of a broader surge in unrest since the onset of Israel's war in Gaza.
This conflict was ignited by a deadly raid by Hamas militants into southern Israel on October 7, which left around 1,200 people dead and over 200 others taken hostage.
In response, Israel has conducted extensive military operations in Gaza, resulting in a staggering death toll of over 38,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
The ministry's figures include thousands of women and children, although it does not differentiate between combatants and civilians.
Since the beginning of the war, over 500 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, primarily during Israeli raids and violent protests.
The casualties include both militants and bystanders, as well as Palestinians killed in attacks by Jewish settlers.

In the midst of this violence, efforts to broker a cease-fire have seen renewed activity.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the dispatch of negotiators to revive stalled talks, a day after Hamas provided a response to a U.S.-backed proposal for a cease-fire agreement.
Negotiators are expected to meet in Doha, Qatar, with American, Egyptian, and Qatari officials participating in the discussions.
The central issues in these negotiations remain unresolved, with Hamas demanding a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and an end to the war.
In contrast, Netanyahu insists that the conflict cannot conclude until Hamas is fully dismantled.
As the situation continues to develop, the recent incident in Jenin highlights the persistent and deep-rooted tensions that plague the West Bank and Gaza, posing significant challenges to peace and stability in the region.
