Shop Owner Jailed for Giving Salary Hike to Employees in Myanmar

In a shocking reflection of Myanmar's turbulent political landscape, a shopkeeper has been jailed for giving his employees a raise amidst the country's soaring inflation. 

The arrest of Pyae Phyo Zaw, a shop owner who ran three cellphone stores, highlights the oppressive measures taken by Myanmar's military government to stifle any perceived dissent or disruption to their control.

The New York Times reported that Pyae Phyo Zaw was detained by soldiers from the military junta, who also shut down his shops. 

His crime? Offering his workers a much-needed salary increase to help them cope with skyrocketing prices. 

Zaw's situation is not unique; he is one of at least ten other shopkeepers who have been imprisoned for similar actions. 

These business owners now face up to three years in prison under a vaguely-worded law that the regime uses to quash any sign of dissent.

Despite the arrests, wage increases have not been explicitly outlawed in Myanmar. 

However, the military regime has charged business owners with “undermining the regime by making people believe that inflation is rising,” according to a legal expert cited by the New York Times. 

This pretext allows the junta to maintain a facade of stability while silencing those who highlight the economic struggles faced by ordinary citizens.

The military junta's stance is that raising wages amid severe inflation incites unrest. Notices placed outside Zaw's shuttered shops accuse him of disturbing “the peace and order of the community.” 

This draconian approach underscores the regime's fear of losing control as the country's economic crisis deepens.

“We were very grateful for the salary increase, but now the shop is closed, and I don’t get paid,” lamented one of Zaw’s employees, speaking anonymously out of fear of retribution. 

“Ordinary people like us are suffering from high prices, almost to the point of despair.” 

This poignant statement encapsulates the dire situation for many in Myanmar, where inflation and economic instability have driven people to the brink of desperation.

The backdrop to these events is the military coup of 2021, when the democratically-elected government was overthrown by Myanmar’s military, the Tatmadaw. 

Since then, the country has been embroiled in economic turmoil, compounded by public resistance against the junta. 

Australian economist Sean Turnell described Myanmar’s post-coup economy as having moved from crisis to chaos and now nearing collapse as a functional, developing entity.

The military junta’s heavy-handed response to wage increases is emblematic of its broader efforts to suppress any challenges to its authority. 

By imprisoning shopkeepers like Pyae Phyo Zaw, the regime aims to send a clear message: any action perceived as undermining their control will be met with severe consequences.
