Young Indians Drive Surge in Travel to Thailand with 60% Increase

New data from Airbnb reveals a significant surge in travel from India to Thailand, with bookings increasing by more than 60 percent year-on-year between 2022 and 2023.

This remarkable growth is largely driven by India's younger generation, with Gen Z and Millennial Indian guests accounting for a whopping 80 percent of bookings in 2023.

As the world's largest population of these age groups, it's no surprise that youth is at the heart of Airbnb’s success in India.

This travel boom saw an especially noticeable spike during the recent Holi and Easter long weekends, when searches by Indian guests for stays in Thailand increased by more than 200 percent.

The trend highlights a growing desire among young Indians to explore international destinations, with Thailand emerging as a top choice.

According to data from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, India has become the fifth largest inbound market for Thailand. T

his increase in travel interest is credited to several factors, including the Thai government’s visa-free policy and its recently announced extension until November 11, 2024.

Additionally, the availability of various non-stop daily flights between India and Thailand has made travel more convenient and attractive for Indian tourists.

Popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Samui topped the list of most booked locations by Indian guests on Airbnb.

The preferences of Indian travelers reflect a mix of beach and city getaways, with the most booked Airbnb categories being Pool, Tropical, Near a beach, Near a national park, and Iconic city.

This trend indicates a strong desire among Indian tourists to experience both the natural beauty and vibrant urban life that Thailand has to offer.

The types of travelers driving this surge include Duo and Solo travelers, who made up the largest segments.

However, small groups (3-5 people) and medium-sized groups (more than 5 people) are the fastest growing segments, with increases of approximately 67 percent and 68 percent year-on-year, respectively, in 2023.

This indicates a broader range of Indian travelers, from individuals and couples to larger friend groups and families, are choosing Thailand for their vacations.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, commented on this trend, stating, “Travellers from India on Airbnb continue to show their love for Thailand with a growing interest in exploring destinations across the country. In addition to some of Thailand’s top destinations, we see Indian guests also exploring lesser-known areas and supporting a more inclusive tourism in Thailand that spreads economic opportunities to more people in more places, not just big cities.”

The Thai government’s extension of the visa waiver for Indian citizens is expected to further support and drive inbound tourism.

With strong appetite for Thailand among Indian travelers, Airbnb is committed to supporting Thailand’s tourism initiatives and helping to make Thailand a top destination for Indian tourists.

This surge in travel interest reflects broader changes in India’s demographics and travel preferences.

As the younger generation continues to seek out new experiences and destinations,

Thailand’s appeal as a vibrant, accessible, and diverse travel destination is only set to grow.

With supportive policies and convenient travel options, the future of India-Thailand tourism looks bright.
