Northern Lights May Be Visible in These Six US States This Week
Forecasters are closely monitoring sunspot region #3697, the same active solar region responsible for the stunning Northern Lights display visible across all 50 states last month. \
As this sunspot remains within Earth's view for the next week, there is a "window of opportunity" for witnessing another spectacular aurora borealis.
Bryan Brasher, a project manager at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, explained to USA Today that sunspot #3697 is still "relatively large and magnetically complex," making it capable of producing intense solar flares and, more importantly, the coronal mass ejections necessary for auroras.
This week, increased solar activity has forecasters expecting potential Northern Lights sightings on Sunday and Monday nights.
The states with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights include those along the Canadian border: Montana, Washington, Idaho, Minnesota, Michigan and Dakotas
Additionally, residents in the northernmost parts of Maine and New York might also have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis, according to NOAA.
Brasher noted that while sunspot #3697 will rotate out of view within the next week, there remains a possibility for auroras akin to last month's widespread sightings.
Achieving such a widespread aurora display again would require a strong (G4) or extreme (G5) geomagnetic storm.
Astronomer Tony Phillips commented that the Northern Lights spectacle on May 10th might have been just the first of several magnificent displays we could witness between now and 2026.
Despite the inherent unpredictability of the Northern Lights, if they become visible again, they are usually brightest within an hour or two of midnight, specifically between 10 PM and 2 AM.
For those hoping to witness this natural light show, staying informed on space weather forecasts and finding a dark, clear sky away from city lights will enhance the chances of experiencing the magic of the Northern Lights this week.
