Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Welcomed Indian PM Narendra Modi at the 50th G7 Summit with a Namaste

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Italy late Thursday night to attend the ongoing 50th G7 Summit.

This significant event marked his first international visit since winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and assuming office for the third consecutive term.

PM Modi was invited by his Italian counterpart, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who extended a warm welcome with a traditional namaste upon his arrival.

News agency ANI shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) capturing the moment.

The video shows PM Modi walking up to PM Meloni, who greeted him with a namaste, reflecting a gesture of mutual respect and cultural acknowledgement.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and engaged in a brief conversation before posing for photographs on the second day of the summit.

PM Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit highlights India's role as an "Outreach nation."

During his visit, he will join the G7 outreach session titled “Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa-Mediterranean.”

This session, hosted by Italian PM Meloni, will also feature the attendance of Pope Francis and other global leaders, underscoring the importance of the discussions set to take place.

Ahead of his departure, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating, “At the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, I am travelling to the Apulia region in Italy to participate in the G7 Outreach Summit on 14 June 2024. I am glad that my first visit in the third consecutive term is to Italy for the G7 Summit.”

He emphasized his anticipation to engage with fellow world leaders on a wide range of issues aimed at improving global conditions and enhancing the quality of life for people worldwide.

PM Modi also reminisced about his previous visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021, highlighting the strong bilateral relations between India and Italy.

He noted, “Prime Minister Meloni's two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth into our bilateral agenda. We remain committed to consolidating the India-Italy strategic partnership and bolstering cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions.”

The G7, comprising the US, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan, is a significant platform for discussing global issues.

Italy, holding the G7 presidency, is hosting the summit from June 13 to June 15, 2024, in Borgo Egnazia, located in the city of Fasano in the Apulia region.

Under Italy’s leadership, the summit focuses on defending the rules-based international system, addressing key global challenges, and promoting international cooperation.

PM Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit and the warm welcome from PM Meloni signify the strong and evolving relationship between India and Italy.

The summit serves as an opportunity for India to contribute to global discussions on critical issues such as artificial intelligence, energy, and regional cooperation, reflecting its growing influence on the world stage.
