India Contributed $1 Million to Continue Promotion of Hindi Language at UN
The Government of India has made a significant contribution of $1,169,746 to the 'Hindi @ UN' project, reaffirming its commitment to promoting the Hindi language within the United Nations.
This substantial funding aims to expand the use of Hindi in the UN and enhance the organization’s public outreach to Hindi-speaking audiences around the world.
Launched in 2018, the 'Hindi @ UN' project is a collaborative initiative between India and the UN Department of Public Information.
Its primary objective is to increase awareness about global issues among millions of Hindi-speaking people by providing UN news and multimedia content in Hindi.
This initiative reflects India's continuous efforts to integrate Hindi into the global communication landscape.
Since the project's inception, India has been partnering with the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC), providing extra-budgetary contributions to support the mainstreaming and consolidation of UN content in Hindi.
The UN News in Hindi is disseminated through various platforms, including the UN's website, social media handles on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as a weekly audio bulletin on UN Radio.
On Thursday, Ambassador R. Ravindra, India's ChargΓ© d'Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, handed over a cheque of $1,169,746 to Ian Phillips, Director and Officer in Charge of the News and Media Division at the United Nations Department of Global Communications.
This contribution will ensure the continuation and expansion of the 'Hindi @ UN' initiative, enhancing the reach and impact of Hindi-language content.
The commitment to promoting Hindi at the UN has yielded impressive results.
The UN Hindi social media accounts boast significant followings, with 50,000 followers on Twitter, 29,000 on Instagram, and 15,000 on Facebook.
These accounts publish nearly 1,000 posts annually, providing regular updates and engaging content to a growing audience.
Additionally, the Hindi UN News website has achieved remarkable success, with 1.3 million annual impressions and ranking in the top 10 in internet search engines.
Almost a year ago, India's then Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, handed over a similar cheque to Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Global Communications, highlighting India's ongoing commitment to the 'Hindi @ UN' project.
This continued financial support underscores India's dedication to fostering greater awareness of global issues among Hindi-speaking communities and enhancing the accessibility of UN content in one of the world's most widely spoken languages.
The 'Hindi @ UN' project stands as a testament to the power of language in bridging gaps and fostering a more inclusive and informed global community.
