First Time in History: Samsung Employees Strike Over Wage Payment

In a historic move, Samsung Electronics employees in South Korea have announced their first-ever strike amidst an ongoing wage dispute.

The National Samsung Electronics Union, representing approximately 28,000 workers, has declared a one-day strike set for June 7, 2024.

This unprecedented action highlights the growing tension between the workforce and the management over stalled wage negotiations.

The union has been in discussions with Samsung Electronics since the beginning of 2024, advocating for a 6.5% pay rise and a bonus linked to the company’s earnings.

Despite prolonged negotiations, no resolution has been reached, prompting the union to take drastic measures.

The decision to strike underscores the workers' frustration and determination to secure better compensation in the face of economic challenges.

The backdrop to this strike is a broader economic context characterized by a global cost of living crisis.

Andrew Willis, associate director of legal at law firm Croner, notes that disputes over pay are the most common trigger for strike actions historically and currently.

With inflation driving up everyday expenses, many workers feel compelled to demand higher wages to maintain their living standards.

However, employers, including major corporations like Samsung, often face their own financial pressures, limiting their ability to meet these demands.

This clash of needs and capacities can result in prolonged disputes, sometimes escalating to strikes.

Ian Moore, managing director of consultancy Lodge Court, emphasizes the critical role of Human Resources (HR) in preventing such disputes from escalating.

Effective HR strategies can create a more harmonious workplace environment and reduce the likelihood of strikes.

Key measures include open and transparent communication, regular engagement with employees, conducting benchmarking studies, and implementing feedback mechanisms.

These strategies can help build trust, ensure competitive compensation, and show employees that their voices are valued.

As Samsung Electronics faces this historic strike, the outcome of the wage negotiations will be closely watched by both employees and industry observers.

This strike not only marks a significant moment in Samsung’s history but also reflects broader economic and labor trends that are reshaping the landscape of employee-employer relations globally.
