Danish Prime Minister Suffers Light Whiplash Injury After Assault in Central Copenhagen

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen experienced a shocking and distressing incident on Friday evening when she was assaulted by a man in central Copenhagen. 

The incident occurred in Kultorvet square, leaving the 46-year-old leader with a minor whiplash injury. 

Although the injury is not severe, the assault has understandably left Frederiksen shaken and in need of some personal time to recover.

Frederiksen was immediately taken to Rigshospitalet for a medical check-up following the attack. 

Her office confirmed that aside from the whiplash, she was otherwise unharmed. In an initial statement, the Prime Minister expressed her shock at the event. 

Later, she issued a heartfelt thank you to those who had reached out with support, describing their kindness as "incredibly touching."

"I am saddened and shaken by the episode yesterday, but am otherwise safe," Frederiksen said. 

"For once, I need peace. Both for body and soul. I need to be with my family and need to be myself for a bit."

The assault took place just two days before the European Union parliamentary elections, leading to concerns about potential political motivations. 

However, prosecutor Taruh Sekeroglu clarified that a political motive was not considered the primary cause. 

Copenhagen police inspector Trine Moller echoed this sentiment, stating that the incident appeared to be a "single, spontaneous act."

The alleged assailant, a 39-year-old Polish man, appeared before a judge for preliminary questioning and has since been remanded in custody for 12 days. 

This swift action by Danish authorities underscores the seriousness with which the incident is being treated, despite it being characterized as spontaneous.

Frederiksen had been campaigning with the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose, around the time of the attack. 

Media reports have clarified that the assault was not linked to any campaign event. Witnesses Marie Adrian and Anna Ravn provided further details to newspaper BT, recounting how they saw Frederiksen arrive at the square just before 6pm. 

According to them, a man approached from the opposite direction and delivered a hard shove to Frederiksen’s shoulder, causing her to fall.

This incident has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the lead-up to the EU elections, highlighting the unpredictable nature of public life for political leaders. 

While Frederiksen recovers from her physical and emotional ordeal, the broader implications of the attack continue to resonate within Danish society.

The Prime Minister’s call for peace and her need to spend time with her family reflect a personal response to a public act of violence.
