Austrian Airlines Plane Suffers Major Damage to Nose During Severe Hailstorm

In a dramatic turn of events, an Austrian Airlines flight from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to Vienna, Austria, experienced significant damage during its approach due to a severe hailstorm.

The flight, OS434, encountered a powerful thunderstorm cell, which caused substantial damage to the aircraft's cockpit windows, exterior coverings, and most notably, the nose cone.

Emmeley Oakley, a passenger on the flight, recounted the harrowing experience to ABC News.

"I think we were about 20 minutes from landing when we got into a cloud of hail and thunderstorm, and the turbulence started," Oakley said.

Passengers onboard could hear the hail striking the airplane, creating a loud and unsettling noise.

Oakley described the impact of the hailstorm vividly.

"We could definitely feel the hail coming down on the plane and it was quite loud and of course super rocky for a minute," she wrote.

The intensity of the storm led the cockpit crew to issue a Mayday call.

For approximately two minutes, the aircraft was battered by hail, causing turbulence so severe that loose objects within the cabin became airborne.

This sudden and intense turbulence understandably distressed some passengers.

"The cabin crew did a really good job calming those people down though," Oakley noted.

Despite the alarming situation, the flight attendants maintained composure and ensured the safety of everyone on board.

Their swift response helped manage the anxiety among passengers and maintain order during the tumultuous descent.

Remarkably, the aircraft landed safely at Vienna-Schwechat Airport, with no passengers harmed.

Austrian Airlines confirmed that all passengers were safe and unharmed following the incident.

"It was a pretty uneventful flight for 90% of the trip," Oakley commented, highlighting the unexpected and sudden nature of the storm.

The extent of the damage became evident only after landing. "It wasn't until we exited that we saw the nose was missing! The pilots really did an excellent job keeping things as smooth and safe as they could," Oakley remarked.

The skill and professionalism of the pilots were crucial in ensuring the safe landing of the damaged aircraft.

Austrian Airlines' technical team is currently inspecting the damage to the aircraft.

The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the challenges it poses to air travel.

The swift and effective response by the cockpit and cabin crew in this situation highlights the importance of training and preparedness in ensuring passenger safety under extraordinary circumstances.

This event serves as a testament to the resilience and professionalism of the Austrian Airlines crew and the robustness of modern aircraft, capable of withstanding severe weather conditions and landing safely despite significant damage.

As investigations continue, the airline will likely review and learn from this incident to further enhance safety protocols and responses to similar future challenges.
