1.6 Million People Worldwide Fall Ill Due to Eating Contaminated Food: WHO

World Food Safety Day, observed every year on June 7, serves as a crucial reminder of the profound consequences of consuming unsafe food. 

In her stark address, Saima Wazed, the WHO Regional Director, highlighted a startling statistic: approximately 1.6 million people globally fall ill daily due to contaminated food. 

This alarming figure underscores the urgency of addressing food safety to protect public health.

A particularly troubling aspect of this crisis is its disproportionate impact on children. 

Wazed noted that a substantial 40 percent of those affected by unsafe food are children under the age of five. 

These young lives, already vulnerable to malnutrition and higher mortality rates, are further endangered by foodborne illnesses. 

This statistic underscores the imperative of ensuring food quality, especially for the most vulnerable populations.

World Food Safety Day, established in 2018 by the UN General Assembly, serves as an annual beacon, highlighting the importance of preventing, detecting, and responding to food safety hazards. 

This year's theme, "Prepare for the unexpected," is especially resonant in a world facing evolving food safety challenges. 

Wazed emphasized the significant economic toll of unsafe food, estimating an annual loss of $110 billion in low- and middle-income countries. 

This financial burden not only hampers productivity but also strains already challenged healthcare systems.

In the Southeast Asia Region, the situation is particularly dire. 

This region bears the second-highest health burden from foodborne illnesses, second only to Africa. 

Wazed highlighted that approximately 150 million illnesses and 175,000 deaths occur annually in Southeast Asia due to contaminated food. 

The human and economic toll in this region is staggering, necessitating urgent and effective responses.

The causes of food contamination are complex and multifaceted. 

The tropical climate in many regions fosters the proliferation of pests and accelerates the formation of naturally occurring toxins. 

Additionally, climate change exacerbates these challenges, making it even more critical to safeguard food systems. 

Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders involved in the food supply chain.

Wazed stressed that food safety is a collective responsibility. 

Governments, producers, and consumers all play crucial roles in ensuring food safety. 

Governments must develop and rigorously test national food safety emergency response plans. 

Producers and food business operators need to diligently implement and update food safety management protocols to maintain the integrity of the supply chain. 

Consumers also wield significant influence in shaping food safety practices. 

By adopting safe food handling practices at home and promptly reporting any food safety incidents, individuals can contribute to mitigating risks. 

Consumer vigilance is a key component in the collective effort to ensure safe food for all.

On this World Food Safety Day, let us heed Saima Wazed's call to action. 

Prioritizing food safety can protect public health, bolster economic resilience, and create a future where safe, nutritious food is accessible to all.
