Landslide in Papua New Guinea Kills Over 100 People

In a devastating natural disaster, a landslide has claimed the lives of over 100 people in a remote village in Papua New Guinea. 

The incident, which occurred in Enga province, approximately 370 miles northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, has left a community reeling and sparked an urgent emergency response effort.

The landslide struck Yambali village in the early hours of Friday, burying parts of the community under boulders and trees from a collapsed mountainside. 

The sheer scale of the disaster has made rescue and relief efforts challenging, with reports indicating that the affected area covers several football fields.

Serhan Aktoprak, the chief of the International Organization for Migration’s mission in Papua New Guinea, described the situation as dire, noting the difficulty in accessing the affected area due to ongoing landslides. 

With water sources inaccessible, power lines down, and food supplies likely to be scarce, the immediate needs of the survivors are shelter, food, and drinking water.

The exact death toll remains uncertain, with initial estimates exceeding 100 casualties. 

However, given the magnitude of the disaster, fears persist that the number could be much higher. 

Prime Minister James Marape has pledged government support for relief and recovery efforts, emphasizing the need for swift action to address the unfolding crisis.

The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of communities in remote regions of Papua New Guinea, where infrastructure is limited, and access to essential services is often challenging. 

Despite being a diverse and developing nation, Papua New Guinea faces significant obstacles in disaster preparedness and response, exacerbated by its rugged terrain and sparse telecommunications network.

As the nation mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of the landslide, international support has poured in, with Australia offering assistance in relief and recovery efforts. 

The solidarity demonstrated by neighboring countries underscores the importance of global cooperation in times of crisis.
