As the car-sized laboratory traversed the Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel that once fed into the Jezero crater billions of years ago, it encountered a hill covered with boulders. Among the dark, volcanic rocks lay a light speckled boulder that immediately caught the attention of the science team. This intriguing rock, named "Atoco Point" after a landmark in the Grand Canyon, measures about 18 inches wide and 14 inches tall. Unlike the basaltic rocks commonly found on Mars, Atoco Point appears to be an anorthosite, a type of rock predominantly composed of feldspar.
