The decision to accept the award has not been without its critics. 

Royal Navy Admiral Lord Alan West advised the Duke to decline the ESPY award, warning that accepting it could result in "rather bad publicity." 

Similarly, royal commentator Michael Cole, speaking with GB News, warned Prince Harry that his "actions have consequences" and suggested he should "politely decline" the award.

Adding to the controversy, Mary Tillman, Pat Tillman’s mother, expressed her disapproval in an interview with the Daily Mail, stating, "I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award."

However, ESPN stands firm in its decision to honor Prince Harry. 

The network, supported by the Tillman Foundation, emphasized that the award celebrates Prince Harry specifically for the work of The Invictus Games Foundation. 

As it celebrates its 10th year, the Invictus Games Foundation continues to promote healing through the power of sport for military service members and veterans worldwide. 

Israel Del Toro, a former Air Force master sergeant who was severely injured in Afghanistan in 2005 and awarded the Pat Tillman Award in 2017, expressed his support for Prince Harry, calling him a "worthy recipient."

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, have become a global phenomenon, providing a platform for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans to participate in sports. 

The games have been instrumental in promoting recovery, rehabilitation, and respect for military personnel, aligning perfectly with the values embodied by the Pat Tillman Award.
