Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, acting as Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII, was known to have his cat by his side. 

Modern records, however, date back to 3 June 1929, when A.E. Banham at the Treasury officially authorized spending "1d a day from petty cash towards the maintenance of an efficient cat." 

This allowance increased over time, reflecting the valued role of these feline guardians. 

By the 21st century, the cost of maintaining the Chief Mouser had risen to £100 per annum.

The First Official Chief Mouser

While many cats have served at Downing Street, Larry holds the distinction of being the first to be officially given the title of Chief Mouser by the British government. 

Before Larry, the cats who served were affectionately given this title, often by the British press rather than through formal recognition.

Larry’s appointment came after a period of vacancy following the departure of Sybil, the previous incumbent, in January 2009. 

Sybil, who had been brought to Downing Street by then-Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling in 2007, was the first mouser in ten years, following the retirement of her predecessor, Humphrey, in 1997.

Larry's Appointment and Duties

Larry's recruitment in February 2011 came in response to a specific incident: rats were spotted scurrying across the steps of Number 10 Downing Street during a TV news report. 

With no current Chief Mouser to tackle the rodent issue, a "pro-cat faction" within Downing Street speculated about bringing in a replacement. 

Soon after, Larry, selected by then-Prime Minister David Cameron and his family from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, took up residence.

Larry quickly settled into his role, demonstrating his natural hunting instincts and charm. 

His duties extend beyond mere rodent control; Larry has become a beloved figure, offering a comforting and charismatic presence amidst the often hectic environment of political life.
