Land Sold for Just 1 Krona Per Square Meter in Götene Town of Sweden

Have you ever dreamt of moving to Sweden? If so, Götene, a quaint town in Sweden, has an enticing offer that might make your dream a reality.

In a bid to attract new residents and rejuvenate its aging population, Götene is selling land for just 1 krona (€0.08) per square meter.

This initiative is part of a broader project to counteract the town’s declining birth rates and demographic challenges, while also leveraging its popularity among tourists.

A Welcoming Opportunity

Götene, with a population of about 5,000 residents, is opening its doors to everyone with this unique land sale campaign.

“Absolutely anyone is welcome to buy one of the plots,” said Johan Månsson, the local mayor.

The only condition is that buyers must begin building on their plot within two years; otherwise, the land will revert to the municipality.

While Månsson did not specify if Swedish residency or citizenship is required, it is likely that only those living legally in Sweden are eligible to participate.

The Cost of Building

Mayor Månsson acknowledges that while the price of land is a critical factor, it is not the sole consideration for prospective home builders.

“It costs a lot of money to build a house, and the price of land isn’t the be all and end all, but it’s an important part of that,” he noted.

With interest rates decreasing in Sweden, the campaign aims to encourage families to take the leap and build new homes in Götene despite the current economic climate.

Götene’s Appeal

Götene is not just a place to live but also a destination to explore.

The town boasts several attractions that draw tourists from within Sweden and beyond.

Key sites include the Romanesque church Husaby Kyrka, the historical landmark Martorpsfallet with its picturesque waterfall, and the wildlife area Österplana Hed och Vall.

These spots offer a blend of historical, natural, and cultural experiences, making Götene a charming place to call home.

Progress and Future Prospects

Since the campaign began last month, three plots have already been sold, and interest continues to grow.

The plots available are spread across the municipality, primarily in developed areas.

This campaign is not unique to Götene; nearby Hylte municipality launched a similar initiative earlier this year, selling 54 plots at the same price.

Duration of the Campaign

The Götene land sale campaign will run throughout 2024 and 2025.

Beyond this period, the initiative's future will be reassessed based on the economic situation.

“After that, it probably won’t be continued, as the economy will most likely go back to normal.

But, of course, we’ll discuss that in the future,” said Månsson.

This land sale initiative in Götene presents a remarkable opportunity for those looking to move to Sweden and build a home in a town rich with history and natural beauty.

Whether you are drawn by the affordable land prices, the charm of the local attractions, or the chance to be part of a welcoming community, Götene offers a unique proposition worth considering.
