Israel Has Lost Sovereignty in Its Northern Quadrant Because of Hezbollah Attack: Blinken

In a striking statement underscoring the severe cross-border tensions, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has declared that Israel "has effectively lost sovereignty" in its northern region due to sustained attacks by Hezbollah.

The militant group, operating from southern Lebanon, has caused significant displacement of the Israeli population, amplifying fears of a broader regional conflict alongside the ongoing strife in Gaza.

The gravity of Blinken's comments highlights the escalating situation where Hezbollah's rocket attacks have driven tens of thousands of Israelis from their homes.

Speaking at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Blinken emphasized that despite the unwillingness of key players—Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran—to engage in full-scale war, the persistent clashes could inadvertently lead to such a scenario.

The Secretary of State's remarks come ahead of a critical diplomatic mission by Amos Hochstein, a senior White House official, aimed at defusing the situation.

Hochstein, President Biden's de facto envoy for resolving the border conflict, is scheduled for talks in Paris with French officials.

These discussions are seen as a last-ditch effort to prevent a larger conflict.

France, with historical ties to Lebanon, has been actively offering proposals to halt the hostilities.

Despite the sensitive nature of the talks, there is cautious optimism that a diplomatic solution might still be possible.

The conflict has seen Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, launching rocket attacks on northern Israel in solidarity with Hamas.

This escalation follows Hamas's aggressive actions that initiated the current war with Israel on October 7.

The fear of a full-scale conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been mounting, with Israeli officials publicly contemplating a strategic military shift from Hamas to Hezbollah, recognizing the latter as a more formidable adversary.

In recent months, U.S. officials have been diligently working to avert such a war. However, the situation remains precarious.

Blinken highlighted that the displacement of approximately 60,000 Israelis from the border area, many now residing in Tel Aviv, underscores the loss of sovereignty in Israel's northern quadrant.

This exodus has mirrored the displacement of tens of thousands of people from southern Lebanon.

Resolving this issue, according to Blinken, necessitates a comprehensive agreement to pull back forces from the border.

He noted that Hezbollah has indicated it would cease its attacks if a cease-fire were achieved in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of reaching such an agreement.

Yet, negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain at an impasse.

Hochstein's recent diplomatic efforts have included meetings with Israeli and Lebanese officials, aiming to broker a deal that would see Hezbollah retreat to a position that Israel deems safe.

In exchange, Israel might consider withdrawing from certain disputed border areas, coupled with potential U.S. economic aid to southern Lebanon.

The diplomatic window, as noted by Firas Maksad of the Middle East Institute, is closing rapidly but remains open.

As the situation evolves, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution that can restore stability and sovereignty to the affected regions.

The stakes are high, and the path to peace fraught with challenges, but the quest for a diplomatic solution continues with renewed urgency.
