Air India Becomes World's No. 1 Airline in Losing Luggage: 50,001 Bags Lost in Last 30 Days

Air India has earned an unfortunate distinction in the global airline industry.

According to a recent report by LuggageLosers.com, the airline now holds the highest rate of lost passenger luggage among all global airlines.

This disconcerting ranking highlights a significant issue for travelers, with Air India losing 50,001 bags in the past month alone.

This translates to a staggering one in every 36 passengers not finding their luggage upon arrival.

LuggageLosers.com, created by developer Pieter Levels, ranks airlines based on the number of lost bags.

The website was inspired by Levels’ personal frustration after Spanish low-cost airline Vueling lost his girlfriend’s luggage two weeks ago, which has yet to be returned.

Motivated by this experience, Levels launched the site to help travelers make informed decisions and avoid airlines with poor luggage handling records.

The website's data reveals that Air India is currently the worst offender, losing 50,001 bags in just 30 days.

This puts Air India at the top of the Luggage Lost Rankings, followed by West Jet Airlines and Aer Lingus.

British Airways, the UK's national carrier, is fourth with 72,594 lost bags in the last month.

Vueling, the catalyst for LuggageLosers.com, ranks ninth with 17,219 lost bags over the same period.

Levels expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “I made this because Vueling lost my gf's suitcase 2 weeks ago and still haven't returned it. Realizing if I had a site like this I'd never book Vueling in the first place as it's #8 worst in losing luggage right now!”

Despite its utility, Levels acknowledges the limitations of his ranking system.

Airlines do not publish live lost luggage data, likely to avoid negative publicity.

Instead, the website uses a combination of social media data and historical lost luggage data to estimate current trends.

“Robot scrapers scour the internet 24/7 for people talking about their lost luggage and which airlines they flew, in 100+ different languages.

By cross-referencing that with actual lost luggage data, it estimates very closely how much luggage is constantly being lost,” Levels explained.

The challenges facing Air India go beyond lost luggage.

Passengers have reported a range of issues including broken seats, dirty aircraft, and malfunctioning entertainment systems.

In May, a "mass sick leave" protest by Air India staffers caused significant flight disruptions, compounding the airline’s operational difficulties.

India itself topped the list of countries with the most airlines appearing on the lost luggage list.

According to the report, airlines in India lost one in every 72 pieces of luggage.

This statistic underscores a systemic issue within the country's aviation industry, affecting multiple carriers and impacting countless travelers.

Air India’s distinction as the world's number one airline in losing luggage is a significant concern for travelers.

With 50,001 bags lost in the past 30 days, the airline’s baggage handling record is in dire need of improvement.

This issue, coupled with other operational challenges, highlights the need for a comprehensive overhaul of Air India’s services.

Travelers should remain vigilant and consider these factors when planning their journeys to avoid the inconvenience and frustration of lost luggage.
