Warren Buffett Changes His Will: Gates Foundation Will Not Get Any Money

In a surprising shift, Warren Buffett, the 93-year-old chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has updated his will to redirect the distribution of his substantial fortune.

In an exclusive interview with the Wall Street Journal, Buffett revealed that upon his death, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will no longer receive any donations from his estate.

Instead, his wealth will be funneled into a new charitable trust managed by his three children.

Buffett has long been known for his philanthropy, previously pledging that over 99% of his estate would support the Gates Foundation along with four family-related charities: the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation.

This decision marks a significant departure from his earlier commitments.

In explaining his decision, Buffett expressed profound trust in his children's values and their capability to steward his philanthropic legacy.

Each of his children already runs their own charitable organization, which gives Buffett confidence in their ability to manage future contributions effectively.

“I feel very, very good about the values of my three children, and I have 100% trust in how they will carry things out,” Buffett stated.

Despite the changes in his will, Buffett continues to support the Gates Foundation during his lifetime.

Recently, he converted around 9,000 Class A shares of Berkshire Hathaway into over 13 million Class B shares, allocating approximately 9.3 million shares to the Gates Foundation Trust.

The remainder was distributed among the four family charities.

Mark Suzman, the CEO of the Gates Foundation, expressed gratitude for Buffett's continued support, acknowledging his generous contributions and invaluable advice over the past 18 years.

Buffett’s total contributions to the foundation amount to approximately $43 billion, a testament to his philanthropic spirit.

In recent years, Buffett has made substantial donations to his family’s charities, including about $870 million last year and $750 million in 2022.

These ongoing contributions reflect his commitment to supporting charitable causes and ensuring that his legacy lives on through his family.

With these recent donations, Buffett retains ownership of a significant stake in Berkshire Hathaway, valued at approximately $128 billion.

His decision to shift the future distribution of his wealth underscores his confidence in his children's ability to carry on his philanthropic vision, while also highlighting the evolving nature of his charitable commitments.

This development not only marks a new chapter in Buffett’s legacy but also raises questions about the future direction of major philanthropic efforts, especially those traditionally supported by the Gates Foundation.

As Buffett's children prepare to take on a more prominent role in managing his philanthropic endeavors, the impact of their contributions will be closely watched by both the charitable sector and the public.
