Sri Lanka Demands Compensation from Russia for 17 Citizens Who Died in the War Against Ukraine

In a significant diplomatic move, Sri Lanka has called on Russia to provide compensation for 17 of its citizens who were killed or wounded while fighting in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. 

A Sri Lankan delegation, which visited Russia on June 27-28, held discussions with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, seeking accountability and support for affected families.

The delegation's visit was aimed at addressing the involvement of Sri Lankans in the war, specifically those who had joined Russian forces against Ukraine. 

According to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks focused on securing compensation for the families of the deceased and injured, as well as facilitating the return of Sri Lankan nationals who are still engaged in the conflict. 

This demand highlights Sri Lanka’s concerns about the welfare of its citizens and the need for Russia to take responsibility for their involvement in the war.

The discussions also covered the early termination of contracts for Sri Lankans still fighting in Ukraine and the provision of financial support for them. 

The Sri Lankan government emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, stressing the need for Russia to cooperate in addressing these pressing issues.

In a bid to establish a more structured approach to these concerns, Sri Lanka proposed the formation of a joint working committee, which would include representatives from both countries. 

This committee would regularly meet to discuss and resolve matters related to Sri Lankan citizens involved in the conflict, ensuring ongoing dialogue and support.

This diplomatic effort follows reports in May that Sri Lanka was planning to send a delegation to Russia to investigate the presence of hundreds of its citizens fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. 

The recent visit and discussions underscore the seriousness with which Sri Lanka views the situation and its commitment to safeguarding its nationals.

The demand for compensation and the call for accountability reflect a broader concern about the recruitment of foreign fighters in conflicts and the responsibilities of host nations. 

As Sri Lanka seeks justice for its citizens, this situation also raises questions about the impact of international conflicts on smaller nations and their populations.

In conclusion, Sri Lanka's demand for compensation from Russia marks an important step in addressing the complex issues surrounding its citizens' involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
