Only Military Strength Can Keep the Peace with China: Taiwan President Lai Ching-te

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed a resolute stance on the island's defense posture amidst escalating tensions with China. 

Following recent military exercises by Beijing around Taiwan, seen as punitive measures against Lai's inauguration speech, the Taiwanese leader emphasized the necessity of military preparedness as a deterrent to conflict.

President Lai, speaking at a press conference marking his one-month tenure, underscored Taiwan's commitment to peace while highlighting the imperative of strength in maintaining stability. 

He asserted, "Peace must rely on strength, which is to say avoiding war by preparing for war to achieve peace." 

This statement reflects Taiwan's strategy of enhancing defense capabilities to safeguard against potential aggression from across the Taiwan Strait.

China's policy towards Taiwan remains contentious, with Beijing asserting its intent to reunify the island with the mainland, even through coercive measures. 

President Lai condemned these actions, noting China's efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically and economically. 

He accused Beijing of employing non-traditional coercive tactics, such as limiting Taiwan's international participation and exerting economic pressure.

The United States, bound by law to support Taiwan's defense despite not having formal diplomatic relations, recently approved a substantial arms sale to Taiwan. 

This move, which includes drones and missiles, underscores Washington's commitment to bolstering Taiwan's defense capabilities amid growing Chinese assertiveness.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry expressed gratitude for the expedited arms sale, highlighting efforts to enhance operational efficiency in defense cooperation with the U.S. President Lai and his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, have prioritized both international arms acquisitions and domestic defense development to strengthen Taiwan's overall security posture.

Despite ongoing tensions, President Lai has extended invitations for dialogue with China, emphasizing Taiwan's right to self-determination. 

He reiterated that the future of Taiwan should be decided by its people, emphasizing that both sides of the Taiwan Strait are equals in the eyes of Taiwanese society.
