Jio Platforms Gets Approval to Launch Satellite Internet in India

Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms, in partnership with Luxembourg's SES, has received approval from India's space regulator to launch satellite internet services in the country. 

This significant development, reported by Reuters, marks a crucial step forward in enhancing digital connectivity across India, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

The approval, granted by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), includes three essential clearances for Orbit Connect India, a joint venture set to provide high-speed internet via satellite. 

These permissions allow Orbit Connect to position satellites above India, paving the way for improved internet access nationwide.

Before Jio Platforms can commence satellite internet operations, additional approvals from the Department of Telecommunications are required. 

These clearances are vital to ensure regulatory compliance and the seamless rollout of services that promise to bridge the digital divide in India.

The approval granted to Jio Platforms comes amid intensifying competition in the global satellite internet sector. 

Companies like Amazon with its Kuiper initiative and SpaceX with Starlink are already prominent players in this field. 

Jio Platforms' entry promises to bring innovative solutions and competitive pricing to the Indian market, further stimulating growth and accessibility in digital connectivity.

Deloitte's forecasts for India's satellite broadband market indicate substantial growth potential, with a projected annual increase of 36% over the next five years. 

By 2030, revenues in this sector are expected to reach Rs 1.9 billion, driven by the urgent need to connect remote areas and support digital inclusion efforts nationwide.

The approval from IN-SPACe underscores India's commitment to advancing its space and digital infrastructure sectors. 

By enabling private companies like Jio Platforms to operate satellite internet services, the government aims to foster innovation, competition, and improved consumer choice in the telecommunications industry.

Looking ahead, IN-SPACe plans to authorize more private companies to operate ground stations in India, facilitating satellite data downloads and supporting ongoing advancements in satellite technology. 

These initiatives align with recent policy changes aimed at attracting foreign investment and boosting private sector participation in India's burgeoning space industry.
