Sorry for Traumatic Experience: Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong After 1 Dead, 70 Injured

In an emotional and heartfelt message, Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong extended his deepest apologies and condolences following a devastating incident on flight SQ321 from London to Singapore.

The flight encountered severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean, leading to one fatality and over 70 injuries among the passengers and crew.

The Boeing 777 aircraft, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, took off from London’s Heathrow Airport and was on route to Singapore when it was struck by severe turbulence.

The turbulence caused the aircraft to descend a staggering 6,000 feet (around 1,800 meters) in just three minutes, a terrifying ordeal for everyone onboard.

Amid the chaos, the pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the flight to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where it landed safely on May 21.

Tragically, a 73-year-old British man succumbed to a heart attack, which is believed to have been triggered by the traumatic experience.

In a video message released shortly after the incident, Goh Choon Phong expressed his profound regret and sorrow.

"We are very sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone onboard SQ321 went through," he stated, acknowledging the harrowing event that had unfolded.

Phong's message continued, “We are deeply saddened by this incident. It has resulted in one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries. On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

Singapore Airlines’ response to the crisis was swift and comprehensive. Phong emphasized that the airline’s priority was to provide all possible assistance to those affected.

"Our priority is to render all possible assistance to our passengers and crew members," he said, highlighting the airline’s commitment to their well-being.

A dedicated team was dispatched to Bangkok immediately following the incident. This team has been instrumental in supporting both the passengers and crew, ensuring that they receive the necessary medical attention and other forms of assistance during this difficult time.

As the investigation into the incident continues, Singapore Airlines is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to determine the cause and to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The airline is also reviewing its protocols and procedures to enhance the safety and comfort of its passengers.

Phong’s message to the public and to those affected by the incident was clear: Singapore Airlines is committed to learning from this tragedy and ensuring the highest standards of safety and care.

"We are committed to learning from this and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew," Phong concluded.

The tragic events of flight SQ321 have left a mark on everyone involved, from the passengers and their families to the entire Singapore Airlines community.

Goh Choon Phong’s heartfelt apology and the airline's prompt response underscore the importance of compassion, accountability, and continuous improvement in the face of adversity.

In times of crisis, the true character of an organization is revealed. Singapore Airlines’ response demonstrates a strong commitment to their passengers and crew, striving to support them through the immediate aftermath and beyond.a
