Indian Passport Is Second Cheapest in the World After UAE

In a revealing study by the Australian firm Compare the Market AU, the Indian passport has been highlighted as the second most affordable passport globally, trailing only behind the UAE in terms of cost-effectiveness. This affordability makes it an attractive option for Indian citizens, particularly in an era where global connectivity and travel have become increasingly significant.

Cost Analysis of the Indian Passport

The study demonstrates that the cost of an Indian passport is exceptionally low at approximately $18.07 (Rs 1,500) for a validity period of 10 years. When broken down annually, this translates to an incredibly economical $1.81 per year. This positions the Indian passport as not just affordable in upfront costs but also in terms of long-term value.

Visa-Free Access

One of the key benefits of any passport is the ability to travel visa-free to various countries. The Indian passport allows holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 62 countries, which includes destinations across Asia, Africa, and Oceania. This feature of the Indian passport is particularly beneficial for travelers who prefer spontaneous and budget-friendly travel.

Comparison with UAE and Global Passports

While the UAE passport tops the list in terms of affordability, it is also notable for offering substantial visa-free travel, making it the most economical choice considering both cost and passport power. In contrast, countries with more expensive passports, such as the USA, Canada, and Australia, offer visa-free access to a larger number of countries, reflecting a higher "passport power."

Most Expensive Passports

On the flip side, the study also sheds light on the most expensive passports in the world. Mexico's passport ranks as the priciest, costing about $231.05 for a 10-year validity, which starkly contrasts with the affordability of the Indian passport. Australia follows closely, underscoring the variability in passport costs globally.

The Impact of Passport Costs

For many in India, the affordability of the passport can be a decisive factor in considering overseas travel and opportunities. The low cost effectively democratizes access to international travel and experiences, which might otherwise be out of reach due to high initial costs associated with travel documentation.

The Indian passport as the second cheapest in the world represents not just an economic advantage but also highlights the country's commitment to making international travel more accessible to its citizens. While it offers limited visa-free access compared to more powerful passports, its cost-effectiveness ensures that more Indians can aspire to and engage in international travel, making it a truly cost-effective ticket to the world.
